چکیده

This note revisits the derivation of the ALE form of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in order to retain insight into the nature of geometric conservation. It is shown that the flow equations can be written such that time derivatives of integrals over moving domains are avoided prior to discretisation. The geometric conservation law is introduced into the equations and the resulting formulation is discretised in time and space without loss of stability and accuracy compared to the fixed grid version. There is no need for temporal averaging remaining. The formulation applies equally to different time integration schemes within a finite element context.

Geometric Conservation Law and Finite Element Methods for 3-D Unsteady Simulations of Incompressible Flow

This paper takes a fresh look at the Geometric Conservation Law (GCL) from the perspective of Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) finite element methods for solving 3-D incompressible viscous flows problems on deforming domain. GCL compliance is traditionally interpreted as a consistency criterion for applying an unsteady flow solution algorithm to simulate exactly a uniform flow on a deforming...

Fully Discrete Energy Stable High Order Finite Difference Methods for Hyperbolic Problems in Deforming Domains: An Initial Investigation

A time-dependent coordinate transformation of a constant coefficient hyperbolic system of equations is considered. We use the energy method to derive well-posed boundary conditions for the continuous problem. Summation-by-Parts (SBP) operators together with a weak imposition of the boundary and initial conditions using Simultaneously Approximation Terms (SATs) guarantee energy-stability of the ...

On the Temporal and Spatial Accuracy of Spectral Difference Method on Moving Deformable Grids and the Effect of Geometric Conservation Law

In this paper we studied and examined the formulation of conservation laws on dynamic moving deforming meshes, in the context of the Geometric Conservation Law (GCL) compliant high order temporal and spatial methods. In particular, we implemented the high order explicit Runge-Kutta (ERK) as the time integrator, and the Spectral Difference (SD) method for the spatial discretization. In order to ...

Nonlinear Elasticity for Mesh Deformation with High-Order Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for the Navier-Stokes Equations on Deforming Domains

We present a numerical framework for simulation of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on problems with deforming domains where the boundary motion is prescribed by moving meshes. Our goal is a high-order accurate, efficient, robust, and general purpose simulation tool. To obtain this, we use a discontinuous Galerkin space discretization, diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta time integrators, a...

A multi-dimensional high-order DG-ALE method based on gas-kinetic theory with application to oscillating bodies

This paper presents a multi‐dimensional high‐order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method in an arbitrary Lagrangian‐Eulerian (ALE) formulation to simulate flows over variable domains with moving and deforming meshes. It is an extension of the gas‐kinetic DG method proposed by the authors for static domains (X. Ren et al., A multi‐dimensional high‐order discontinuous Galerkin method based on gas ki...
